Using VDSL Monitor.
WORK IN PROGRESS
After installation and configuration of VDSL Monitor you can now start using VDSLMonitor's cool features.
You can start gathering information in two ways.
1. In a static mode by clicking 'Actions / Test connection' menu option.
This method is mainly used to test connectivity but it can be used to gather static information from the gateway.
After the 'Test connection' command finishes all the DMT and current VDSL statistics will be loaded into VDSL
Monitor. This information is static and will not change until another 'Actions / Test
connection' command is executed.
This method also creates a 'preview.txt' file in the default VDSL Monitor directory. The purpose of this file is
to troubleshoot the gateway's firmware changes so new versions of the firmware can be includded in future versions
of VDSL Monitor.
2. In a dynamic mode by clicking the 'Actions / Start acquisition' menu option.
By using this method VDSL Monitor will execute one acquisition run periodically and set by the acquisition interval.
Information gathered in this mode will make all the charts and logs be updated accordingly. This is the main intended
use for VDSL Monitor.
In this mode VDSL Monitor will create and append information to the following files (the format and number of files is
subject to change in the future.)
2.a statistics.csv [VDSL line and change statistics file]
2.b event_log.txt [VDSL Monitor events log]
2.c *.png [Image files created by the automatic ftp upload process]
2.d *.html [HTML files created by VDSL Monitor 'save as' reports]
Errors and changes to the VDSL line and statistics will be graphed and logged to the appropiate sub systems.
After a successful connection to the gateway the DMT graphs will be shown in the first tab. As you move the
mouse over these charts the tone information window will change accordingly. The information displayed in the window is:
1. Current VDSL band.
2. Tone number selected.
3. Frequency range for the selected tone.
4. Bit load for the selected tone.
5. Bits in ADSL band
6. Bits in VDSL downstream band 1
7. Bits in VDSL upstream band 1
8. Bits in ADSL downstream band 2
Points 1 to 4 are self explanatory.
Point 5 is the total number of bits assigned to the segment used by ADSL's downstream (which is now part of VDSL downstream band 1).
Point 6 is the total number of bits assigned to VDSL's downstream band 1 excluding the ADSL segment in point 5.
Point 7. is the total number of bits assigned to VDSL's upstream band 1.
Point 8. is the total number of bits assigned to VDSL's downstream band 2.
At this point you can start an acquisition run and get some data. Some features like the error distribution chart require
VDSL Monitor to be running for a few hours in able to see some results. So to start the acquisition process set the
acquisition interval to the desired time interval and on the main window click on the main menu's 'Actions / Start acquisition'
One important thing to understand is that the CRC, FEC, SNR error graphs are based on the acquisition interval so if you
set this interval too high these graphs will change based on that particular interval.
